Frequently asked questions

How do you work out the fuel cost of a journey?

Multiply the kilometres by your car's consumption and divide by 100: that gives you the litres. Then multiply the litres by the price of fuel. For example, 300 km in a car that uses 6 l/100 km is 18 litres; at €1.50/l, that is €27.

How do I convert miles per gallon to litres per 100 km?

Divide 282.5 by your UK mpg figure. For example, 45 mpg is about 6.3 litres per 100 km. If your car shows US mpg, divide 235.2 by it instead.

Is it worth driving further to a cheaper petrol station?

Only if the saving per litre, multiplied by the litres you will buy, is greater than the cost of the extra kilometres. The second calculator on this page does it for you.
